Laval
Laval is in the west of France between
Normandy and Brittany, less than 300 kilometres from Paris - 3 hours by
road - 2 hours by High Speed Train. It's a small provincial town with
about 60 000 inhabitants, what you might call 'La France profonde'. It's
ideal for short stay language holidays ; not too far from the coast, but
far enough inland to enable you to feel you're really in France. Your
pupils or students can make the cultural break, and see some of the
differences between France and their own country. The people are
friendly and welcoming. Many of our host families have been working with
us for several years. It's a place where French is the only language of
communication, which means that your pupils or students will use French
in their everyday lives.
There's plenty to see and visit in the
area ; from Roman ruins in Jublains to the slate mines in Renazé. The
Mont Saint Michel and Saint Malo are about two hours away by coach.
Fougères, which has one of the biggest medieval castles in Europe, is
just down the road. Or you can visit the Loire Valley, and the castles,
Le Mans, with the motor museum, the caves of Saulges or the Normandy
Beaches.
The town also offers plenty of leisure
opportunities of its own: discos, a bowling alley, a swimming pool,
cinemas, etc..., as well as cultural attractions, restaurants and
shopping facilities.
